  • Linz, Cultural Capital of Europe 2009. Ars Electronica Center. Level -3: Main Gallery. New Views of Humankind. RoboLab. FT and Manoi PF01 are Japanese robots that combine design artistry with leading-edge technology. Several details of their construction aim to counteract the cliche? of robots as mere high-tech musclemen: big eyes and a broad forehead convey openness; the expansive chest radiates self-assurance. Whereas FT comes across as very feminine and elegant, Manoi PF01 gives the impression of strength and friendliness. FT is one of the world?s first female bipedal robots. Its slim feminine body was a real engineering challenge since there were so many parts that had to fit inside. Plus, a slim build makes it harder to maintain balance. FT?s parts were designed especially to evoke a lean, feminine physique. FT is equipped with 23 motors and two gyroscope sensors.?Manoi PF01 is the first robot product that features both physical capabilities and animation-like design. Manoi PF01 was designed by Tomotaka Takahashi and developed by KYOSHO. It?s equipped with 17 high-torque KONODO motors and 2 gyroscope sensors. In this interactive installation, humans and robots can share one special moment. ?Shadow? builds a bridge between the real shadows of the installation visitors and the virtual ones of the robots. In the interplay of these shadows, both worlds come together. You?re invited to join in on this interplay! Step behind the screen and become part of the shadow world of FT and Manoi PF01.
